Water For Elephants

A retired veterinarian, who worked in the circus all of his life, recalls his past in the early 1930s when the circus was going from town to town by train during the Depression and hard times. The circus owner (Christoph Waltz) was a man of strong character who would have bouts of violence in which he would not only hurt animals but humans. The owner was married to a beautiful young woman (Reese Witherspoon) who falls in love with the now-older storyteller (Hal Holbrook), which leads to ...

We Bought A Zoo

This is a heart-warming movie that is for the whole family. It's a true story about a man (Matt Damon) with a pre-teen daughter and a teenage son who lost their mother, and the father decides to buy an old zoo to bring some diversity and excitement into the children's lives. On the grounds are some very interesting people, headed up by the zookeeper (played by Scarlett Johansson). I hope Matt Damon plays more roles like this one, instead of shoot 'em up, bang bang—that mean ...

What Lies Beneath

I hope to save the public some money by giving a review of the film, What Lies Beneath.  According to a local newspaper male movie critic, he couldn't find enough adjectives to give this a four star rating.  He also wrote that Michelle Pfeiffer should be nominated for an academy award.  He tried to say it was a suspense film in the nature of Alfred Hitchcock (probably after Hitchcock died). You should thank God he's not your stock broker ...

What the #$*! Do We Know?

If I would have known that Ramtha/JZ Knight was in the film, I wouldn't have gone to see it. But, obviously somebody "up there" didn't want me to know, so I went, and the film was actually worth seeing–technically it was very well done.

All of the other people–scientists and theologians–who presented their theories had some very good things to say about how the particle world affects us humans, our thought life, and how we view reality. I wondered as I ...

Whiplash

J.K. Simmons plays a music teacher in a top-notch New York music jazz school who is only interested in making musicians exceptional and great, and often his methods seem abusive. See if you can tell if Miles Teller is really playing the drums. I'm a musician, and it was hard to tell. I think he played the longer-shot scenes and close-up scenes, someone else may have done that. Regardless of who did it, the drumming is exceptional. You don't become a great drummer unless you have a great ...

The World's Fastest Indian

Reviewed on Mar 20 2007

This is one of those films that, because there's no unnecessary violence and nudity, wasn't a big hit at the Box Office, but this film is one of Anthony Hopkin's best acting roles.  In New Zealand an older motorcycle racer who has odd but loving ways goes to the Salt Lakes in Utah to race his strange-looking but very fast original motorcycle made by a company called "Indian."  It's a story about people helping other people.  It would be a great family...

The Yellow Handkerchief

Reviewed on Apr 25 2011

This film is a sleeper film that is excellent for its story. It is the story of a man, Brett, with a troubled past who finally meets a beautiful woman who has the kind of qualities that attract him to her, like handling a fishing boat, and being quite independent driving a truck, and being a straight shooter. She likes his beautiful heart, as she has a sense of knowing good character, plus the fact that she says, "I love your face because it's a face of kindness." They recognize in each ...
